Overview

 

Bill Amos is an arbitrator with extensive experience in commercial and maritime arbitration. Before becoming a full-time arbitrator, Bill was a partner at an international law firm in Hong Kong, having over 30 years' experience in arbitration. 

​

Bill has been appointed as arbitrator in numerous commercial, international trade and maritime arbitrations, both ad hoc and institutional. He is a panel arbitrator with leading arbitral institutions, as well as being the Vice President of the Hong Kong Maritime Arbitration Group.

 

Bill's experience includes the following areas:

Commercial: international trade, aerospace, aviation, sale of goods, shareholder agreements, and telecommunications.

​

Maritime: all aspects of shipping law and ship finance including charterparties, shipbuilding contracts, sale & purchase MOAs, bills of lading, ship management agreements, loan facility agreements and marine insurance.

Arbitrator experience (selected)

Numerous appointments as arbitrator under charterparties, bills of lading, contracts of affreightment and ship sale and purchase agreements (ad hoc, HKIAC and HKMAG)

 

Several appointments as arbitrator in disputes concerning international trade of oil, coal, iron ore, and soft commodities.

​

Appointed as arbitrator and president of tribunal in ICC arbitration of a shareholder dispute arising out of joint venture agreement between China and German entities.

 

Counsel experience (selected)

Representing a satellite owner in their claim in LCIA arbitration under a satellite lease agreement, conducted under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations.

​

Representing the shipowner/buyer in a shipbuilding contract HKIAC arbitration, involving the shipowner's entitlement to claim under the refund guarantee despite the existence of a restraining order/injunction.

​

Following the release of an oil cargo in exchange for a letter of indemnity, representing the shipowner in the defence of the cargo claim, and claiming an indemnity under the charterparty.
